Next up is the ‘Distortion’ series, consisting of ten images. These are the first six.
This one’s pretty self-explanatory. The literal distortion of the images, a representation of the way grief can make memories unintelligible. Like a slate in the process of being wiped clean. Memory breaks down into pure abstraction, where nothing makes sense. Maybe nothing ever made sense. It’s all up in the air.
On the technical side, in stark contrast to “No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross”, these were an absolute blast to draw. This was so out of my comfort zone, but it wasn’t a challenge to get through them. I would take the original picture (“Drag” for instance is a picture of me), warp it with photo editing tools, and then work from the warp, recreating it with charcoal.
