Tracking

With this body of work, I aim to explore the tension of depicting familiar spaces using a base in representational realism – neighbourhoods, malls, trails – and breaking them down to the point of being almost unrecognizable. If you were occupying the space, reality would seem to be fragmenting before your eyes, almost as if life itself was glitching out. Taking the comfortable, and making it uncomfortable.

These works are a response to how many people of my generation are currently experiencing adulthood. Unaffordable housing, stagnant wages, loss of economic and social stability, the fallacy of retirement, political backsliding and social unrest; all of these factors are stressors, creating a feeling of reality breaking down. This isn’t the way that things were supposed to play out, and we’re experiencing it in real time. An ideal that was promoted towards us is slipping away. Contrast that with the fact that, although life has never been better for more people, things still feel as helpless as ever. It’s as if reality is abstracting itself. Hence, ‘Tracking’ – like the warning that pops up when the picture on a VHS tape is starting to run askew.

This body of work is a living document. There will be more works created for this collection in the future; even now, in 2026, reality still feels like it is regressing.
