‘Occultatum’ was my first solo exhibition, running from February 1st – March 24th, 2019 at the Station Gallery in Whitby, Ontario.
This work takes cues from film noir and cinematic thrillers – exploring what remains obscured, treading into areas which are better left untouched. However, it is not limited to mere physical presence in a space, but also emotional presence. We all put up walls about what we’re feeling, and emotion can release what is hidden behind the facade of a familiar space.
‘Occultatum’ is the Latin word for ‘hidden’; this work placed the viewer into spaces where they may not feel the most welcome – making them question whether or not the space is theirs to occupy. It’s about stepping into that boundary between light and dark, and asking them to make a decision.
Is the light a sanctuary, or does it suggest a greater hazard than the darkness ever could? Is remaining in the shadow the safer option? Just what is hiding in the dark?
Who is trespassing upon whom?
