This is the ’Manifest’ series: ten paintings, each showing a singular figure with very outward, abstracted displays of grief.

These figures have more visceral physical effects than the ‘Poem’ series. I wanted to really depict grief in a graphic way. In a way that the viewer can’t ignore or brush past. And the physical malformations in these pieces seemed to be the best way to do so. I wanted to express the pain, the loss, the weight of it all in a way that translated visually on the canvas. I wanted these paintings to hurt.

These ten pieces are drastically different than anything I’ve ever done before. It was such a challenge to work through, and out of everything in the show, these are probably what I’m most proud of.
