Again, a piece done for the ‘Tracking’ series. This time, the glitch has taken a figure!

At the time I painted this, back in 2022, I hadn’t painted a figure in detail in quite some time. Before that, the most extensive figure work I had done was for “Into the Thick of It” from 2019. And even in that work, they were largely shrouded in shadow.

I’m not a huge fan of the face on the male figure; I think it’s a little scuffed. But, this piece gave the confidence to tackle the mountain of painted figure work I did for the ‘The Quiet Part, Out Loud’ exhibition in 2023.

It’s all about making strides, you know?

Also, it turns out that shingles take a really, really, really, really long time to paint. It took me, like, three different passes to finally get them right. But they turned out in the end.
